Boghev village sits nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in a remote, mountainous region of Gorno Badakhshan in Tajikistan, an area often struck by landslides and rockfalls.
In a place like this, water for farming does not come easily. In 2025, the village’s irrigation channel was rebuilt to make that water more dependable, an effort made possible through FOCUS donor support. The rebuilt channel now runs about 1.2 miles.
Along the most dangerous stretch, a steep section prone to falling rock, engineers installed a metal pipe strong enough to withstand impact. The rest of the channel was built with durable piping. Workers also completed a significant amount of concrete reinforcement and repaired the main water intake structure so the system could function fully again.
Thirteen hectares of farmland, roughly 32 acres, now receive water reliably. This is land that local families depend on for their harvest, made possible in part through the continued generosity of FOCUS donors.
“With the new irrigation channel, our fields receive water on time, ensuring crops grow and families can rely on their harvest,” said a member of Boghev village.
There is something quietly meaningful in restoring access to water in a place where the land itself makes it hard to come by. This project did more than repair a channel. It gave the people of Boghev something to depend on again, and it stands as a reminder of what FOCUS donor support makes possible in the places that need it most.
