To reduce suffering and save lives. Our focus is on communities vulnerable to environmental and man-made disasters, conflicts or instability.
Our Vision
To help people recover and rebuild their lives, by creating disaster-resilient communities.
Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS), was founded in 1994 by the Ismaili Community under the guidance of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan and currently operates in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.
According to the UN, the majority of the world’s population now lives in areas affected by natural hazards.
Focus Humanitarian Assistance provides emergency relief, builds resilience and brings response and resettlement programs to communities suffering from natural or man-made disasters. Together with its affiliates in Canada, USA and Europe, FOCUS works to help the vulnerable reduce their dependence on humanitarian aid by facilitating their transition to disaster resilient communities, creating opportunity for a better quality of life.
As an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), FOCUS collaborates closely with several of its agencies, as well as a number of other like-minded agencies and donor partners.
Lasting Impact
We support nearly 40,000 local emergency first response volunteers.
We helped fund community-managed weather monitoring posts, which provide early warning of disasters in over 600 avalanche-prone settlements.
We have helped communities build 5,000 natural-hazard-resilient hospitals, schools and community centres.
In part, through the Future Ready Initiative (FRI), we helped resettle over 10,000 refugees in Canada.
Lasting Impact
Implemented through Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) and further supported by Aga Khan Health Services, Aga Khan University and Aga Khan Foundation.
